St. Teresa of Ávila was a Spanish Carmelite, reformer, mystic, and Doctor of the Church. Catholics seek her intercession for deeper prayer, courage in reform, and friendship with Christ.

Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada was born in Ávila in 1515 and entered the Carmelite Monastery of the Incarnation. After years of illness and an uneven life of prayer, she experienced a profound renewal centered on the humanity of Christ. She described prayer as friendship with God and wrote with unusual clarity about recollection, discernment, humility, and growth in charity. Her major works include The Life, The Way of Perfection, and The Interior Castle.
With St. John of the Cross, Teresa helped renew Carmelite life through communities devoted to prayer, poverty, and a simpler observance of the Rule. She founded monasteries despite illness, travel, misunderstanding, and opposition. She died in 1582, was canonized in 1622, and in 1970 became one of the first two women named Doctors of the Church, alongside St. Catherine of Siena. This novena asks for her help in persevering in prayer and allowing union with God to bear fruit in practical love.
