More about St. Luke

The New Testament identifies Luke as a beloved physician and a companion of St. Paul. Ancient Christian tradition attributes to him the third Gospel and Acts, two volumes that trace the saving work of Jesus and the mission of the early Church. His Gospel gives special attention to prayer, the Holy Spirit, God’s mercy, women, the poor, and those pushed to the margins. It also preserves the narratives of Christ’s infancy, which include the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, and Presentation of the Lord.

Acts continues the story from the Ascension through the spread of the Gospel from Jerusalem toward Rome. Luke presents Christian mission as the work of the risen Christ through the Holy Spirit, carried by witnesses who pray, serve, suffer, and speak with courage. Tradition also honors Luke as a patron of physicians and artists. This novena asks for his help in hearing God’s word carefully and making the mercy of Christ visible in daily life.
