St. John Henry Newman was an English priest, cardinal, theologian, and Doctor of the Church whose lifelong search for truth led him from Anglican ministry into full communion with the Catholic Church. His writings illuminate conscience, the development of doctrine, education, and the call to holiness. As Catholics, we pray the novena to St. John Henry Newman for light in times of uncertainty, fidelity to conscience rightly formed by truth, perseverance in conversion, and wisdom in teaching and study.

St. John Henry Newman was born in London on February 21, 1801. He studied at Oxford, was ordained an Anglican priest, and became a prominent preacher and tutor. During the 1830s, he was a leading figure in the Oxford Movement, which sought to recover the apostolic and patristic foundations of the Church of England. His study of the early Church and of the way Christian doctrine develops over time gradually convinced him of the claims of the Catholic Church. Blessed Dominic Barberi received him into full communion on October 9, 1845. St. John Henry Newman was ordained a Catholic priest in 1847 and established the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Birmingham, where he served through preaching, education, pastoral care, and work among the poor.
St. John Henry Newman’s works include sermons, prayers, poetry, "Apologia Pro Vita Sua", "An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine", and "The Idea of a University". He defended conscience as the echo of God’s voice within the human person, while insisting that conscience must seek and obey objective truth rather than private preference. Pope Leo XIII named St. John Henry Newman a cardinal in 1879, and St. John Henry Newman chose the motto Cor ad cor loquitur, "Heart speaks to heart." He died in Birmingham on August 11, 1890. Pope Benedict XVI beatified him in 2010, and Pope Francis canonized him in 2019. On November 1, 2025, Pope Leo XIV proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church and named him, with St. Thomas Aquinas, co-patron of the Church’s educational mission. His optional memorial in the General Roman Calendar is October 9, the anniversary of his reception into the Catholic Church. The novena is prayed from September 30 through October 8 in preparation for that celebration.
