St. Andrew was one of the Twelve Apostles, the brother of St. Peter, and a fisherman called by Jesus. Catholics seek his intercession for readiness to follow Christ, bring others to Him, and persevere in missionary witness.

The Gospel of John presents Andrew as a disciple of John the Baptist who heard him identify Jesus as the Lamb of God. Andrew followed Jesus, spent time with Him, and then brought his brother Simon Peter to meet the Lord. In the Synoptic Gospels, Jesus calls the brothers from their nets and promises to make them fishers of men. Andrew also appears when the disciples bring forward the boy with five loaves and two fish and when Greek visitors ask to see Jesus.
Ancient Christian tradition remembers Andrew preaching the Gospel beyond the lands named in the New Testament and suffering martyrdom at Patras in Greece. The familiar X-shaped cross became his symbol in later tradition. Eastern Christians honor him as the First-Called, and many local Churches look to him as an apostolic founder. This novena asks for his direct and generous spirit: to recognize Christ, remain with Him, and invite others into the same friendship.
