More about Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The New Testament does not recount Mary’s presentation in the Temple. The feast grew from an ancient Christian tradition preserved in early writings about Mary’s childhood, especially the Protoevangelium of James. These writings are not part of Scripture, so the Church does not treat every narrative detail as revealed history. The tradition nevertheless expresses a truth seen throughout Mary’s life: she belonged wholly to God and freely welcomed His will.

The feast was celebrated in the East for centuries and later entered the Roman calendar. It invites the faithful to contemplate Mary as the daughter of Israel who listened to God’s word and became the Mother of the Lord. Her dedication was not withdrawal from ordinary life, but readiness for the service God would ask of her. This novena seeks her intercession for a faithful offering of one’s gifts, duties, vocation, and future to God.
