In 1830, St. Catherine Labouré, then a novice of the Daughters of Charity in Paris, reported apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the community chapel on Rue du Bac. Catherine said that Mary showed her a design for a medal bearing the invocation, “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” The first medals were struck with ecclesiastical permission in 1832. Reports of conversions and favors led the faithful to call it the Miraculous Medal.
The Miraculous Medal is a Marian sacramental. Its images point to Christ’s saving Cross, Mary’s union with His mission, her sorrowful heart, and the communion of the Church. The faithful wear it as a sign of devotion to Mary and trust in her maternal intercession. This novena asks Mary to lead the faithful to Jesus and help them receive and use God’s grace well.
